These criteria are the standard by which most bariatric surgeons assess appropriateness for weight loss surgery:
- BMI over 40 or 35 – 39 with at least 2 significant co-morbidities
- Failed diets and other non-surgical attempts at weight loss
- No contraindications to surgery (terminal cancer etc)
- Ability to comprehend and provide informed consent
- Willing to commit to long term follow-up
